The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program (Vanier CGS) was created with the aim of attracting and retaining outstanding doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning.

Scholarship Information:

  • Deadline: Before 1 Nov 2022 (annual)
  • Study in: Canada
  • Course starts: May/Sept 2023
  • Host Institution(s): Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation. 
  • Level/Field(s) of study: PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
  • Field(s) of study: Health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research.
  • Number of Scholarships: Up to 166 scholarships annually
  • Scholarship value/duration: $50,000 per year for three years.

An eligible doctoral program must include the following:

A significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is reviewed at the institutional level as requirement for a completion of the program.

Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study are also eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Eligibility requirement:

• Nomination by only one Canadian institution that holds a Vanier CGS quota;

• Not holding a doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program) Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

• Intention to pursue, following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate program) studies and research at the nominating institution;

• Having completed 20 monthsor less of doctoral studies as of 1 May 2023

• Having completed 32 months or less of full-time study in their doctoral program, by 1 May 2023 if:

• Enrolled in a joint graduate research program. Applicants that fall into this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program; or

• Accessing directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or

• Accessing from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.

• Having achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates should check the first class average as defined by individual institutions

• Not holding, or having held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.

Application instructions:

• Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian Institution with a Vanier CGS quota. Students cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.

How to Apply for Scholarships in Canada for International Students

 

• Candidates can apply in one of two ways. Either by the student informing the faculty at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program OR by institution initiating the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

• The student must prepare the application and submit it to the nominating institution by the set internal deadline using the ResearchNet application system. Following that, the nominating institution forwards the nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by 1 November 2022.
